The President of the Russian Federation is the head of state and guarantor of the Constitution, human and civil rights and freedoms. The President is elected directly for a six-year term through universal and equal suffrage by secret ballot.
The inauguration of the President of the Russian Federation is a solemn ceremony to mark the beginning of the state leader’s term of office. The event is held in the Grand Kremlin Palace.
During the official ceremony the President publicly takes his oath to office in front of the Federation Council members, State Duma MPs and the Russian Constitutional Court judges. There is also a certain number of insignia required for the ceremony and determined by the President. These are the Chain of Office, his Standard (flag) and a special copy of the Constitution that the President is sworn in on. After the oath of office the state leader delivers an obligatory speach to his citizens. At the end of the ceremony the President walks into the Cathedral Square in the Moscow Kremlin to review a parade of the Presidential Regiment.
